Welcome to Copley Village
Nestled between Halifax and Sowerby Bridge, the village of Copley sits peacefully beside the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation canal. With its mix of history, community spirit, and beautiful surroundings, Copley is one of Calderdale’s hidden gems.
A Village by the Water
Copley’s riverside setting has shaped much of its history. The village was once served by Copley Railway Station, which operated from 1856 until 1931, connecting local residents to nearby towns and cities. Although the station is long gone, the railway still passes close to the village, and its legacy remains part of Copley’s charm.
Local Life and Facilities
Today, Copley is a thriving and welcoming community with a range of local amenities. The village has a hairdresser, a health spa, a garage, and even Land Rover and Camper Van dealerships. The local pub, The Volunteer Arms, is a favourite gathering spot for residents and visitors alike.
One of the most striking landmarks is St Stephen’s Church, built between 1861 and 1865 by Colonel Edward Akroydfor the workers of his textile mill. Designed by the local architect William Henry Crossland, the church remains a fine example of Victorian craftsmanship and community heritage.
Sports and Community Spirit
Copley is proud of its strong sporting traditions. The village is home to both Copley Cricket Club, who play in the Halifax Cricket League, and the Old Rishworthians Rugby Club, who compete in Yorkshire 1 of the RFU National League.
Both clubs enjoy stunning locations, bordered by the canal to the north and the River Calder to the south, with the Leeds to Manchester railway line nearby. Beyond regular matches, both venues host community events and celebrationsthroughout the year, bringing people together in true Calderdale fashion.
Industry and Innovation
Just a few miles outside the village lies one of the key data centres for Lloyds Banking Group, which was formerly the main data centre for HBOS before the two banks merged. This modern facility is a reminder of how the area continues to evolve, balancing its industrial heritage with new technology and opportunities.
